Fallout 76's Milepost Zero Update Requires Full Game Reinstall

Players of Fallout 76 will need to redownload the entire game when the upcoming Milepost Zero update is released in the coming days. The update, which will repack the game to reduce its overall size, requires a fresh installation of approximately 104 GB on Steam for those using the English language pack.

Since its release in late 2018, Bethesda Game Studios has consistently expanded Fallout 76 with new content. Most recently, the Skyline Valley update in June added a new region, quests, and items. The upcoming Milepost Zero update promises even more content but will only be accessible after the full game reinstall.

Bethesda's official support account confirmed on Twitter that Fallout 76 will go offline at 10 AM Eastern Time on September 3 to apply the update. While some players questioned the need for a complete redownload, others welcomed the effort to shrink the game’s file size.

With many popular games, like Baldur's Gate 3 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 taking up over 150 GB of space, the industry has been trending toward larger file sizes. However, future advancements, such as Unreal Engine 5’s Nanite, could lead to more efficient game compression.

Milepost Zero will introduce significant changes to Fallout 76, including a new location and caravan mechanic, which will adjust the game’s pacing. The update will also overhaul the Legendary crafting system, initially introduced in 2019's Nuclear Winter update.

This update comes after Fallout 76 saw record-high player numbers in April, coinciding with Amazon Prime Video’s popular Fallout TV adaptation. Bethesda also plans to release another major update, Gleaming Depths, focused on endgame raids, this December.
